About Our Beef
Our cattle are born and raised on our ranch right here in Northern California its what you call a closed herd. Our cows are on a schedule to calf in early spring February, March, April time frame. After calving we usually give them some time to get their babies going before re-introducing the bull for next years calves. When the calves are approximately 2 months old we castrate the males, brand and ear tag both male and females. At 8 months old we wean them from their mothers this helps the mother regain her composition before her next baby is close to the end of the gestation cycle. Because we only graze enough animals that our ranch can easily support we usually don’t feed anything but grass.
Cattle in a feedlot with steroid can easily gain 5.5lbs a day which is an example where more isn’t necessarily better. Grass fed cattle gain on average about 1.8lbs to 2.5lbs a day when good grass is available, and takes a much longer time obtain their to full weight, so long in fact we don’t do it, to maintain meat tenderness we harvest our animal at as much as 500lbs less then feedlot animals. Some producers are unwilling to give up that additional weight and will feed their grass-fed animals all the way up causing them to be an older animal which leads to tougher meat. Tenderness is something we believe shouldn’t be sacrificed. We strive to ensure our meat is naturally healthy, tender and delicious.
